Mepilex Border Sacrum Silicone Foam Dressing
Mepilex Border Sacrum is a self-adherent, absorbent silicone foam dressing designed for wounds located around the sacral area. It can be used for both the treatment of existing pressure injuries and as part of a comprehensive prophylactic programme to help prevent pressure ulcer development.
The anatomically shaped dressing is designed to fit securely around the sacrum while providing effective exudate management and protection for vulnerable skin.
Safetac Soft Silicone Technology
The wound contact layer features Mölnlycke’s Safetac® soft silicone adhesive technology. Safetac is designed to adhere gently to the surrounding skin without sticking aggressively to the moist wound bed.
This helps:
- Minimise pain during dressing changes
- Reduce trauma to the wound and surrounding skin
- Protect fragile or sensitive skin
- Support atraumatic dressing removal
- Reduce the risk of damage caused by repeated dressing changes
Multi-Layer Absorbent Construction
Mepilex Border Sacrum contains a flexible absorbent pad made from several functional layers:
- A soft silicone Safetac wound contact layer with a film carrier
- An absorbent polyurethane foam layer
- A non-woven spreading layer that distributes wound fluid
- A layer containing superabsorbent fibres for exudate retention
- A breathable, waterproof outer film
The multi-layer design absorbs and retains wound exudate while helping to reduce the risk of leakage and maceration around the wound edges.
Waterproof and Breathable Protection
The outer film is breathable but waterproof. It helps protect the wound from dirt, moisture and external contaminants while allowing water vapour to pass through the dressing.
The dressing may support normal patient hygiene routines when applied correctly and according to clinical guidance.
Pressure Injury Prevention
Mepilex Border Sacrum may be used as part of a comprehensive pressure injury prevention programme for patients considered at risk of developing sacral pressure ulcers.
Preventive dressing use must be combined with appropriate clinical measures, including:
- Regular patient repositioning
- Pressure-relieving support surfaces
- Skin inspection and skin care
- Appropriate nutrition and hydration
- Mobility assessment
- Continence and moisture management
- Individual pressure injury risk assessment
The use of a preventive dressing does not replace standard pressure injury prevention protocols.
Clinical Evidence
Clinical studies cited for Mepilex Border Sacrum have reported positive outcomes when the dressing was used as part of a pressure injury prevention strategy.
Reported findings include:
- Up to an 88% reduction in sacral pressure ulcer incidence in a US randomised controlled trial
- Reduced pressure injury treatment costs in a large patient cohort analysis
- Prevention of deterioration in many suspected deep tissue injuries when sacral and heel dressings were used within a clinical care programme
Clinical results may vary depending on the patient’s condition, risk level, care setting and the complete prevention protocol used.
